Another eczema & psoriasis flare-up

As some of you already know, I am "blessed" with eczema and psoriasis. I've always chosen to remain quiet about it, but have realised over time that sharing my experience has helped the people around me understand while keeping self-esteem issues at bay. So if you've got it, speak up and don't be afraid.

I grew up with dry skin. I have a vague recollection of my childhood with eczema; nothing too severe according to my mother. During the winter period of 2000, I suffered a major psoriasis breakout around my torso. This was while I was completing my final year at the Nottingham Trent University. In hindsight, it was probably stress-related. Graduating with a first-class honours degree in engineering was a mere consolation =)

I've had a few flare-ups over the past couple of years but have managed to keep it at bay with topical steroid treatments, and a variety of off-the-shelf treatments. In 2005, I found a skin specialist that I was finally comfortable with -- Dr. LP Tan based in TTDI, KL. In addition, I have managed to identify stress as one of the triggers and that has lead to new ways of managing my life.

However, my skin is acting up again! Over the past fortnight, I have suffered from a major eczema flare-up. The itch has become unbearable over the past few days, despite moisturizing. While I doubt it's stress this time around, I am guessing it's probably in relation to poor diet.

I've just spent a sleepless night, but hopefully things will change for the better soon. I am embarking on an elimination diet, to try and pinpoint the food chemical trigger(s). Over the next fortnight, I'll be sticking to a vegetarian diet, and staying away from milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, yeast, seafood and food with preservatives. This also means staying away from booze, although I suspect this is going to be very difficult with the New Year celebrations over the coming weekend =P

There are lots of links on the web with regards to eczema and psoriasis. I'd recommend Wikipedia to start with, as well as Evelyn Lim's blog: Eczema Skin Treatment.

By the way, it doesn't spread. So don't worry -- we can still hang out!

Merry Christmas!

Sorry for the blogging absence -- the excess turkey and booze got to my senses over the past week.

Merry Christmas; especially to my friends and fellow associates. Hope you had a good one!

What does the Malaysian Internet Exchange look like?

Paul Ooi has blogged about MyIX and AIMS, where he works as a systems engineer. Interesting post with photos of the AIMS data centre. I find the use of iMacs to be intriguing.

Interesting bits from his blog post indicate the following:

Publishing with the new Blogger

UPDATE: Publishing process worked nicely! I'm going to play around with the new features now =)
I'm publishing this piece with the "new Blogger" which is just about to be released from it's beta state. Keeping my fingers crossed that the FTP publishing process works properly.

Blog away!

By the way, here's what I came across on my old dashboard after logging in this morning:

More storage on Picasa Web Albums

I came across an interesting addition to my Google Picasa Web Albums settings earlier this evening. It now allows international users to purchase more storage -- finally! This has been available to users in the US since the start, and it's nice to see this open to everyone now.

Picasa now offers the following storage options:

  • 250MB (Free)
  • 6.25GB ($25 per year)
  • 25GB ($100 per year)
  • 100GB ($300 per year)
  • 250GB ($500 per year)

Kudos to Google for making these options available to everyone. All we need now is more free space =)

Singapore Marathon -- that's me on video!

Disappointed by the missing official photo of me crossing the finish line, I decided to purchase the official marathon video from Marathon Videos. It's an amazing business model: just key in your bib number, and they render a custom video clip giving an overview of the race + the race winner crossing the finish line + 3 different camera angles of me crossing the finish line -- all for SG$9.95. Now multiply that with 28k participants, and you've got some good money!

Now, check me out along the timeline at 1:26, 1:51, and 2:05. I'm wearing a sleeveless tee, and raising my arms for finishing in position 1713! (pimping myself!)

Photos from the Singapore Marathon

I regret that I didn't carry my camera(phone) with me on race day, as Vignesh and I missed out on loads of cool shots. And to compound it all, Marathon Photos doesn't have an official photo of me crossing the finish line. I'm blocked by everyone else!

As a consolation, here are some "partial" shots of me crossing the finish line in position 1713:

Run, raise your arms and smile for the cameras! With my tongue sticking out!

Spot me at the back?

Vignesh on the other hand (you lucky boy!) has got official photos just waiting to be printed out -- bravo, V! You crossed the finish line despite our heavy breakfast:

Why did we put ourselves through this?Phew, finally!

The Singapore Marathon

I took part in the Singapore Marathon 10KM run on Sunday, 3 December 2006. It was my first "competitive" run, which turned out to be an amazing experience. The event was very well organised, with the only dampener being the hiccups faced during the baggage collection at the end of the day.

I finished in position 1713 out of 5132 participants in the 10KM run with a gun/clock time of 1h:7m:41s. Based on the ChampionChip, my time was 1h:7m:9s. The winner, Samuel John Moses of Malaysia, completed the 10KM in 32m:29s. Kudos!

My rank as seen on the official website (see: screenshot of full results with gun and chip times):

Summary of my gun and chip times, as seen on RunPix:

Here's how I fared against everyone else in the 10KM run:

  • Ranked 1713 in the entire field of 5132 participants
  • Ranked 304 out of 1035 participants in my division (Male, 25-29 years old)

My average time per KM was 6m:43s (8.9 KM per hour); or 10m:48s per mile (5.6 miles per hour):

The average time for the 10KM run was 1h:17m:07s:

Overall, I'm delighted to have completed the run. It was both exciting, and tiring. I was a little disappointed that I couldn't meet my initial sub 1 hour target - better luck next time. My buddy, Vignesh, and I, hope to do better next year. There's talk that we may attempt a half-marathon (21KM) soon!
