We usually do that. Only 10% of the whole meeting involves the environmental part - the rest is just disagreements, accusations, rantings between the Client, planners, engineers, contractors, etc. *yawn* So we get them to discuss our part first because the rest is irrelevant to us.
Nevertheless, it depends on who conducts the meeting. Some do it so efficiently, half an hour and everything gets finalised. Some drag and repeat and OMG! I just feel like tearing my hair out!
For me, sometimes I **uhhh** just zoned out half the time. ;)
I have had 11 hours (incl 45mins lunch squeezed in) departmental meetings before. Only 1/11th of it concerns me. But I cannot zone out as much cos I'm *ALWAYS* the minute taker.
@melissa: it's exactly like you've described. Efficient meetings would be tose completed within 30-60 minutes. If it's a brainstorming session, make sure it's held in the morning, before lunch, and no more than 2 hours.
@ivan: hah hah. Sleeping at a meet is tough in a big room with few people. But I'll try it sometime - perhaps with my eyes open? Just zone out.
@tsulin: 11 hours in insane, poor you! I always show people my handwriting when they ask me to take minutes.
@ranga: I wrote that comment in the morning. Then as I headed out for a meeting (thankfully, a short one), I recalled that I didn't reply to yours. Sorry!
I think the "5pm" viewpoint is spot on. These days, I try and block off time on my Outlook calendar for personal "work time" which I use to do real work (not Facebook).

Sometimes I think they actually wait till 5pm before PURPOSELY dropping a tonne of work on your desk that is mysteriously 'urgent.'
You can't avoid it. All you can do is give them the 'look'.
Next time I end up in one of these sessions, I'll try just excusing myself. Life's too short for aimless meetings.

Try sleeping during the meet!

Hey! What happened to a "@ranga"???

@Praveen : Ummm... hello, handwriting?? Which parallel world are you living on? Use the laptop to minute-la!
@tsulin: you're missing the strategy! I show them my handwriting (which is ugly, no doubt), cause I don't bring my laptop for meetings =)
@praveen : BUT.. that's cheating! (My boss insists we all carry laptops into meetings -_-")
