My first rounding adjustment

UPDATE: Bank Negara Malaysia has put up information on the new rounding mechanism (FAQ) - check it for further details

From April 1st, all retail outlets in Malaysia will have to round the total cash sales. If your burger costs RM8.51, then you pay RM8.50.

Here's the simple rule: Round 1, 2, 8 & 9 to 0, while 3, 4, 6 & 7 goes to 5. Got it?

No, I don't get it. 8, 9 goes to the next 0, or the 0 before that?

Ie : RM8.59 should theoretically round-UP to RM8.60

Why so complicated one? Why can't they just round up or down?? Gee!!

@tsulin: your example is correct =)

The new system is rounding to the nearest multiple of five sen, i.e.:

DOWN 8.51 --> 8.50
DOWN 8.52 --> 8.50
UP 8.53 --> 8.55
UP 8.54 --> 8.55
STAY 8.55 --> 8.55
DOWN 8.56 --> 8.55
DOWN 8.57 --> 8.55
UP 8.58 --> 8.60
UP 8.59 --> 8.60
STAY 8.60 --> 8.60

Indeed, it is complicated. In fact, I feel it's unfair that consumers have to pay extra, in any case. It's time that retailers moved towards incorporating taxes in the final price of goods. Just charge me 8.50 and get it over with.

What were you doing eating alone at McD's in Midvalley at 7.40pm today?

@Praveen : Paying extra .. like 2sen? Oh come-on! People throw the dirty brown coins everywhere.

@ranga: Wow. How did you manage to pick out the time? That photo was blurry!

I had to buy a modem. Figured I'd stuff my stomach first before running off to the IT mall.

@tsulin: hah hah. Funnily, most of the 1sen coins I've got look new. Perhaps it's because no one uses them.

The Blogger email follow-up system rocks! Now it feels like we're chatting realtime. Geeky coolness!
